I went to Surabaya in Indonesia for 8 days, from February 18 to 25, as part of the Busan – Surabaya Youth Exchange Program arranged by BFIC. We visited many places including the Surabaya City Hall, the Rumah Bahasa Language Institute, the Al-Hikmah Muslim School, the Ciputra International School and learned about Indonesian culture, history, language and the city Surabaya. With our new friends we exchanged presents and Instagram contact info.

  The homestay began on the 4th day and my homestay friend was Janeeta, a 7th grader, who loves K-pop including EXO and WANNA ONE and speaks fluent English. I tried many traditional foods and sang a Korean birthday song for Janeeta’s brother during the homestay. The family shared their warm hospitality as if I had been a member of their real family. I received chocolates, a necklace, a small bag, and a batik scarf for my parents. The 'Surabaya Art Festival' was the last event we participated in. I was grateful that the festival was planned for the students from Busan and we were happy to perform together with local friends. Our hosts had prepared many Korean songs which they sang for us.

  The first day went slowly, but time flew for the rest of the days and we had to go back to Korea. I won’t forget the week I spent with my Busan friends and many Indonesian friends. I learned something more than English and about cultural exchanges; something more that cannot be described with words. I also made many good friends. I’d like to say thank you again for the memorable time and everyone who worked hard to make it possible.

  2월 18일부터 25일까지 8일간 부산국제교류재단의 [부산 청소년 교육방문단] 프로그램으로 인도네시아 수라바야에
다녀왔다. 기간동안 우리는 수라바야 시청, 언어교육원(Rumah Bahasa), 이슬람학교(Al-Hikmah), 국제학교(ciputra) 등
다양한 기관들을 방문하여 인도네시아의 문화나 역사, 수라바야에 대한 소개를 받고 인도네시아어를 공부했다.

  특히 이슬람학교를 방문하였을 때는 교문에 들어설 때, 버스 안으로 보이는 우리를 향해 손을 흔들며 인사해줬는데, 처음 느
껴보는 환영이라 내가 이런 대접을 받아도 될지 얼떨떨하였다. 학교 가사실에서 인도네시아 전통 음식을 만들고, 우리가 준비
한 공연도 보여줬는데, 생각보다 친구들이 호응을 많이 해줘서 뿌듯했고, 가사까지 따라하는걸 보고 K-pop이 이렇게 영향력이 컸는지 새삼 느끼게 되었다. 선물 교환과 인스타그램 아이디도 공유하며 현지 친구들과 한 걸음 더 친해지는 계기가 되었다.

  4일째부터는 홈스테이를 하였는데 내 홈스테이 친구는 7학년 Janeeta로, 엑소와 워너원 등 K-pop을 좋아하고 영어를 정말 잘했다. 홈스테이 기간 동안 다양한 전통음식들을 시도해볼 수 있었고, Janeeta의 오빠 생일 식사 자리에서는 Janeeta와 함께 한국어로 생일 축하 노래도 불러줬다. 처음 뵌 분들도 나를 따뜻하게 대해주시고 진짜 가족이 된 기분이어서 행복했다. 내가 정말 좋아하는 초콜릿들과 목걸이, 작은 핸드백, 그리고 부모님을 위한 바틱 스카프를 선물 받았다.

  'Surabaya Art Festival' 참여를 마지막으로 일정을 모두 마쳤다. 이 축제가 부산 학생들을 위해 만들어진 축제라는 것을 들으니 정말 감사했고 현지 학생들과 함께 무대를 장식할 수 있어서 행복했다. 다른 공연들도 우리를 위해 한국 노래를 많이 준비해주셨고, 스크린에 일주일동안 인도네시아에서의 우리 사진들도 영화처럼 띄워졌다.

  첫째 날은 시간이 정말 느리게 가다가 어느 순간 눈 깜짝하니 벌써 한국으로 돌아가야 할 시간이 되었다. 같은 학교 후배들과 친구들, 그리고 수많은 인도네시아 친구들과 함께했던 일주일을 나는 죽을 때까지 잊지 못할 것이다. 단순히 영어공부와 문화교류만이 아니라 말로 할 수 없는 무엇인가를 많이 배워가고, 좋은 친구들을 사귈 수 있었던 것 같다. 정말 소중한 시간이었고 우리를 위해 힘써주신 모든 사람들께 감사하다는 말을 전하고 싶다.
