It’s already been 3 years since COVID 19 broke out. So many things had to go through unwanted changes and as a parent, I certainly sense the feeling of distance from school. I have missed too many opportunities to participate directly in my child’s school life on site, including the entrance and graduation ceremony, and the parents meeting.

With the ‘with COVID’ policy, however, the distance has been closed. In this issue, I’d like to introduce the steps the school and the parents are taking through the parents club I’m attending.

‘’Library in Mom’s Arms Parents Club’ is a parents reading club run by the school my child attends: Jangseo Elementary School (Geumjeong-gu). There are 10 mothers this year in a gentle and amicable mood as all of us love books.

‘Story narration’ is the main activity of the club. We visit the classes of the first and second graders for an oral narration twice a month during the semester. 10 minutes in the morning. It is not long, but it’s a special moment for us to communicate directly with the children.

It is also very important to get trained to learn the theory and technique of the narration that takes place in advance (5 times a semester). The training helps us fall into love with narration and find out what makes it difficult, and fun, transforming mothers into ‘the picture book teacher’.

We also had a reading meeting to read and talk about a book of the week (4 meetings have been held including Kim Ho-yeon’s 『Uncomfortable Convenience Store』). The members used to do volunteer activities at the school library and have bookstore tours and cultural tours before the COVID situation. I can’t wait to participate in these activities once the situation gets better.

‘Story narration’ begins at 8:40 in the morning and it is certainly not easy to trust mothers to manage the precious class activity time, particularly in this COVID situation. Fortunately, we are allowed to get into the classroom this year. Jangseo Elementary School is trying to recover the school as much as possible while following safety precautions strictly. ‘Story narration’ is one of the measures.

This activity has been carried out since even before the COVID. Some of this year’s members have been in this club for 8 years, saying they have been  helped by the school in many fields. Which means, the principal, vice principal and other teachers in charge, have been supporting the club. It’s such a grateful thing.

Then the parents—the morning time is always war against time for mothers, too. The mothers however come into the class with their hearts filled with excitement to share the joy and emotions a picture book can give to the children because they know how special it is to communicate with each other.

This activity has been complete thanks to the courage, efforts, passion, and affection of the teachers and parents for the children at Jangseo Elementary School. Thanks to the homeroom teacher’s effort, we got sponsored by the Education Office in Busan this year. I’m very proud to be a part of this activity as it is not something that is common in other schools.

‘Story narration’ actually needs technique. First, you need to pick a picture book the children can focus on. Even a 10-minute class needs to create an atmosphere, and you must have enriched vocal expression, as it is hard for the kids to see your face due to a mask. You will make it happy as long as you can communicate with the kids; talking to them and building an emotional bond.
It was really hard in the beginning but also very rewarding to find myself improving day by day.The most rewarding thing was to see the children deeply immersed in, and enjoying the picture book they met through me, which brought me deeper into the charm of the ‘Story narration.’

My child says it was a  happy and proud moment to see mom at school and it was fun to have this special and unique class to communicate with a mother of a child from the same town. Many children often say hello to me when they see me on the street thanks to this activity, which brings our hearts closer to each other. (However, you must be careful, as some children may feel isolated to see someone else’s ‘mom’ in different circumstances.)
“A picture book is art for everyone to enjoy.” This is a sentence written in the picture book café (Fruit Dad, Picture Book Mom), a book by Ms. Ryu Ji eun, who is one of the club members, and picture book instructor. Picture books are open to everyone. The best thing about ‘Story narration’ is the reunion of children and adults in the world of the picture books.

I joined the club because I loved reading and to help my child’s school life. Despite the expectation about the ‘book narration’ starting again this year, I was also quite worried about myself narrating a story as a non-Korean native. However, my worries were gone in the first training session as my members welcomed me and encouraged me a lot.
Encouraged, I chose a book by a Japanese writer. It’s a book by Shibata Keiko called『Bread Thief vs Fake Bread Thief』(KADOKAWA, 2021. Translated into Korean by Hwang Jin-hee, Gilbut). This is popular in Japan these days, filled with interesting pictures and sentences. I chose the book for the children to have a day full of laughter.

Then there was something that worried me. Would it be okay to narrate the story in Japanese? As well as the heart-breaking history between Korean and Japan, the relationship between the two is getting worse and worse. What if it put my child into trouble? Worried, I was the only one who chose a Korean translation for my child’s class, only among the 10 classes.
I found that my worries were mistaken. Not like my worries, the children welcomed the Japanese version. It was the first Japanese book for many of them in their lives, and they concentrated on my narration;they were interested. It was me who learned a lot and was healed by the children and the teacher’s heart-warming compliments. I was in the middle of multi-cultural education through the book.
This year’s activity is about to end, but I’d love to keep being a part of it if possible. I also hope many other places can enjoy such an activity besides this school. I will always be a strong supporter for every other school, and parent, to strive for the childrens’ happiness and bright future.
