Busan Winter Festivals

Busan is a four-season city with events and festival happening year-round. While not containing as many festivals as other seasons, winter in Busan is just as magical and contains many festivals to keep you entertained. Check out these festivals to give you some winter cheer and to ring in the new year right.

Haeundae Lighting Festival (해운대 빛 축제)

Every year as the nights grow longer, Haeundae transforms into an oasis of lights. Transforming the beach and nearby streets into an ocean of lights, the Haeundae lighting festival is the perfect place to go on a romantic date or to take the family. With lights starting at Haeundae station, different tableaux line the way to the beach. Light tunnels and other displays line the square. Booths to write your new year wishes allow you to post them in hopes that the next year will be bright and happy.

At the end of the square, where the beach begins, a large Christmas tree welcomes you with glowing lights spread out above. On the beach, thousands of lights stretch above the sand, making the beach look like a starlit ocean. Sculptures, decorated with brilliant lights pop up among the blue lights allowing for magical photos. Often there is a booth on the way back to the station that will print a photo for you for free so you can put the memory up where you can see it instead of leaving it on your phone.

The lights typically go up in mid-November and continue through the end of February. The lights are turned on around 6pm and continue to midnight. Admission is always free. Visit https://www.busan.go.kr/eng/bsevents for more information.

Busan Christmas Tree Festival (부산 크리스마스트리 축제)

Not to be outdone, the Busan Christmas Tree festival is held every year in Nampo-dong, near Yongdusan park. The streets along Gwangbok-ro are decorated with lights overhead while trees and holiday themed lighting displays line the road. Each year the designs of the lights change making it unique every year to view. The road is always crowded with young couples walking arm in arm, stopping to take the occasional photo, as well as families doing the same.

Starting at Nampo-dong station exit 7, the main shopping street is closed to traffic allowing pedestrians to get the most out of the festival. Following the road leads to a giant Christmas tree set up over the iconic statue that sits at the center of Nampo-dong. In front of the tree is a stage where live performances happen almost every weekend. Street vendors and food carts are there to provide you with a warm drink or food to make the winter night a bit cozier.

As the festival takes place in a popular shopping district you can take care of any last-minute holiday shopping you need to get done. The lights begin in early December and continue through the beginning of January every year. The lights are turned on at six pm and run through midnight. Admission is always free. Visit https://bctf.co.kr for more information.

The 2023 Citizen’s Bell Ringing Event (2023

As the year draws to a close, every culture has a different way of celebrating it. Busan has the Citizen’s Bell Ringing in Yongdusan Park in Nampo-dong. Every December 31 and ending in the early hours of the morning, the bell ringing draws over 20,000 people to Yondusan park every year.

The event starts around 11pm with live entertainment including musicians from many different styles, the night is highlighted by a countdown to New Years, a brief fireworks display, and the ringing of the traditional bell by notable citizens of Busan. The bell is struck 33 times to welcome in the new year. The tradition of the bell ringing dates back to the Josen Dynasty to signal the start of a new day.

Visitors should arrive early if they want to see the performance as seating is limited. Due to the late time of the event,
the subways are open later (typically until 2am) so visitors can get home easily. Admission is always free. The best way to access the park is to use Namp-dong station, exit 7 and turn left toward the escalators going up into the park. Visit www.bfo.or.kr for more information.

Busan First Sunrise Festivals

Linked to the New Year’s celebration, the first sunrise of the year holds special meaning. With covid causing most of the sunrise festivals to be canceled, the return of normalcy this year will help return this tradition to the forefront of winter festivals. Held at dawn, participants can attend from the wee hours of the night until the next morning. Traditionally, the Diamond Bridge was closed to traffic and people could walk along it. On the beach people released balloons and were served rice cake soup.

An organized festival can be found at Gwangan, Dadaepo and Haeundae Beaches, with more than 200,000 visiting Haeundae Beach in 2020, the last festival before the pandemic. For those wishing to partake in the sunrise with smaller crowds, head to the mountains or any of Busan’s seven beaches. Many people hike up Geumjangsan, Jangsan, and other mountains to get the best view of the sunrise. Other popular places are the Dadaepo Beach Park, the Amisan Observatory, and Dalmaji hill.

The Polar Bear Festival (북금곰 축제)

One of the more unique festivals in the winter, happening around the first week of January is the Polar Bear Festival. Participants brave the cold water of the winter sea to prove their strength and to help raise money for a good cause. Starting around noon over 2,000 people plunge into the water to enjoy the cold water. Some win prizes by claiming a floating ball in the swim contest.

After chilling in the cold water, participants are given vouchers to warm up in one of the many natural hot spring saunas that are near the beach. The festival also has other attractions and food for anyone even if they are not participating in the event.

Registration for the event is around 25,000 won and includes a festival T-shirt, swim cap, towel and other assorted items. Visit http://bear.busan.com for more information.

The Jeongwol Daeboreum Festival

Known as the fire festival, the Jeongwol Daeboreum Festival falls on the first full moon of the Lunar year, about 15 days after the Seollal holiday. The Jeongwol Daeboreum Festival is held to pray for a good harvest, good health and fortune in the coming year. The custom for the festival is to build a daljip, a large bonfire made of straw to burn under the moon. Participants are encouraged to write their wishes and add them to the daljip. The first record of this celebration goes back to the Silla dynasty, and with the exception of a short time when it was banned in the 1970s to prevent fire, the festival has been a continuously celebrated activity to help send winter off. Traditions include Bureom (cracking nuts to keep teeth healthy for the coming year) Dalmaji (climbing the mountains to be the first to see the rising full moon) and traditional games. Traditional performances make the festival even more exciting.

The festival this year will be on February 5 and is celebrated in several locations around the city. At the time of writing, exact locations and times haven’t been posted but popular locations are at Haeundae Beach, Gwanganli Beach, Songdo Beach, and Baekunpo Sports Park.
