PNU-area American continues success in Korea

Liam Cullivan hadn’t been a public school teacher in America for long when he decided that type of conventional job just wasn’t for him.

“I walked into the teacher’s lounge and saw a bunch of teachers complaining about their students and waiting for retirement,” he says. “I just thought to myself, ‘I don’t want to be that person in 20 years.’”

After Cullivan, in his own words, “escaped” to Korea, “conventional” is the last word anybody would use to describe his time in the country.

When he arrived, just west of Busan to Masan, Korea in 1995, he had a typical English-teaching job at a hagwon. But he quickly branched out. He moved on, first to Kyungnam University and then to Busan National University (PNU). In his free time, he began teaching boxing. Never one to use his vacations only for actual vacation, he bought a bar in Kanchanaburi, Thailand.

This is where his stories begin, stories he himself doubts few will believe and, in turn, seems sheepish to even bring up in the first place. Like the story of how that bar in Thailand came to an end – when the Thai mafia ran him out of the area for refusing to pay tribute money to them. Or stories about “The Blowfish,” the fairly infamous bar he helped run for roughly three years on the SongJeong beachfront. It routinely received the award for “Best Burger in Busan” from a local magazine, but perhaps people remember it most for the waitresses: they wore bikinis and scampered across the road to swim during their breaks (the bar was commonly referred to as “Thailand in the front, Afghanistan in the back”). Or about the night in 2011 when he organized a party on a boat decked out to look like a pirate ship for several busloads of customers of the PNU-area bar he still owns, The Basement.

“We had I think it was 360 people on a boat,” he says in Cullivan’s, the second bar he currently owns, which he opened roughly a month ago.

“I remember that party!” comes a shout from across the room from a patron listening in, who happened to be aboard said pirate ship.

“Try to control that,” continues Cullivan, reminiscing with the man. “We only lost a speaker and broke one bus window. For the number of drunken, crazy foreigners on that ship, we did pretty well. People started climbing up the mast and I’m like, ‘Get down! If we lose you…the boat’s insured, but not for your life!’”

Some stories Cullivan also stands firmly behind.

“My second year in Korea on St. Patrick’s Day, I looked all over for a party. I called all over Itaewon and Busan, but nobody was planning anything. I knew some Philippine singers and I paid them like 200 bucks to sing Irish songs, and then about five Irish-Americans, like me, and 40 Koreans hung out at a place called the Atlantis Pub in Masan and had Korea’s very first St. Patrick’s Day party. I will fight to the death anybody who says anything different. That has been going on every St. Patrick’s Day since. One time, we even had a St. Patrick’s parade where we all marched through the streets of Busan,” he says, before adding with his huge laugh, “I hope there are no pictures of that.”

As much fun as his time in charge of bars in Busan has been, Cullivan says it has also made him proud.

“Some of the best nights were the live music nights. A lot of great bands have come out of The Basement and other bars in the PNU area: Say Sue Me, Genius, and – they’ll kill me if I don’t mention them – Hajimama.

“There’s been a lot of Basement marriages,” he adds. “More than I can count – at least 30. I had one guy whose band was playing and he cued up all these pictures of their love story and then they stopped playing and he proposed to her. It was great.”

In fact, The Basement was where Cullivan met his own wife, Dre Bang. They met 10 years ago – she was the bar’s manager.

“I think it was alcohol power,” she jokes when first asked how they got closer, before adding, “He looked very tough and everything, but when I worked with him, I realized he was very honest and kind.” The pair now have two daughters together and are co-owners of The Basement and Cullivan’s.

“You never do anything by yourself,” Cullivan says of his wife and everyone who he’s worked with in Korea and abroad at his many successful establishments past and present (in addition to The Basement and Cullivan’s, he currently operates the trading companies KAP and Cullivan’s ASIA, along with a muay Thai gym called Hippo in Ko Samui, an island in Thailand). “I had a lot of good staff and friends. And actually, some of them run other bars and own other bars now. I’m proud of that too.

“If I had stayed in America, I don’t think I would be as happy as I am here,” says Cullivan. “I have these places here that I love. I have two kids and a nice family. Korea’s been great to me.”
