New Media in Busan

New Media in Busan

he Museum of Contemporary Art is located on Eulsukdo, right in the middle of the Nakdong River; the lon

gest river in South Korea. And as you approach the Museum of Contemporary Art, the museum strikes aw

e in you, just like staring at the width of the rider. You are taken with a kind of amazement at the size of the

wall. Just like the Nakdong River, which runs from the imposing Taebaek Mountains, the Museum’s front

wall spans quite a distance. The building is covered with plants and moss in an eco-

friendly effort to reduce heating and cooling costs. However, the result, now that some of the plants don’t l

ook to be in great condition, is simply to strike wonder into the viewer, and to serve as juxtaposition to the

pristine, modern interior.

New Media: The Rise and Development of Media Art in Busan is just one of three exhibition

s currently showing at the Museum of Contemporary Art, so visitors could spend hours exploring the muse

um. Or simple check out one exhibition, and then spend some time walking around Eulsukdo. The New M

edia exhibition incorporates pieces from various media sources, and most surprisingly, from a broad timefr

ame; with some pieces dating back to the early 90s. There are works that utilize multiple forms of media a

nd mediums, there are some that you can simply enjoy, and there are some that you can interact with. Thi

s interactive element is something that will reach some audiences who may not be traditional art enthusias

ts. Visitors can use their hands and bodies to interact with and produce art; they can use tablet computers

to interact with and animate stationary pieces, they can use computers to produce their own versions of art

works; all the while, marvelling at how all of this art was being produced in our very own city of Busan.

Visitors are introduced to the wave of progressive young artists, many of whom had studied abroad, and w

ere returning to Busan, but were sceptical of the methodologies of academism still prevalent in art colleges

, and sough alternatives. Artists such as Nam June Paik played a part in a burgeoning new craze that eve

ntually spawned the currently well known Busan Biennale and Busan Museum of Art. The exhibition focus

es on the Busan region and catalogues a time when artists were beginning to utilize new video techniques

, the internet, photographic technology, and moving works using beam projectors to create art works that

mirrored the rapidly changing society that they were living in. Modern art enthusiasts enjoy exhibitions whe

re distinctions between installation art and the use of media do not exist. But in the New Media exhibition

we are reminded of a time when such distinction did exist, and where prohibitive expectations were often i

mposed upon artists.

In the exhibition, we are taken on a journey through the hundreds of pencil sketches used to create a stop

frame video. The sketches plaster the walls from ground to ceiling and remind us of the work behind each

piece. We are amazing by the technological advancements that allow artists to illuminate still photographs

and to animate them; creating a progressive story. We are given the freedom to interact with a stationary, l

ive action kaleidoscope, we can relax and enjoy short films, we can engage our senses in a room that feel

s like walking through a cloud, and we can be blown away by the scale of a digital worksite.
