Hello. I’m Utsunomiya Megumi, a Japanese woman who has been married to a Korean guy for 7 years. My child started first grade in elementary school and I’d like to share what I learned from the experience. It is of concern who parents to send their kids to school. I hope this article can be helpful to many parents of preschoolers. There are national·public·private elementary schools and international schools in Korea. Considering my husband’s workplace and our educational policy, I chose public school. Each school has distinct features and they are different to one another. The following section will give you more information about schools.
반갑습니다. 한국인 남편과 다문화가족 7년차, 일본인 우쓰노미야 메구미 입니다. 나는 올해 아이가 초등학교에 입학을 했고, 그 과정에서 알게 된 것을 공유해보려한다. 학교에 아이를 보낸다는 것은 참 걱정거리가 많은 일이다. 예비초등학생을 둔 부모들에게 도움이 되기를 바란다. 한국의 초등학교에는 국립·공립·사립, 외국인학교 등이 있는데 나의 경우 남편의 직장 위치와 부부의 교육 방침을 고려해 공립학교를 택했다. 학교마다 다양한 특색이 있고, 차이점도 많을 수 있으니 아래 글을 참고하면 좋겠다.
School Supplies
입학까지의 흐름
When you have a child due to start elementary school the following year, an admission letter will be sent to your address, as registered on your ID(Alien Registration Card), in around November or December. The ‘letter’ tells you about ‘the orientation day’, and you must bring your child to the school on that day. (Contact the Office of Education about early or delayed admission)
‘The Orientation’ usually starts in early January. It is not a briefing session. All you have to do is to submit ‘the admission letter’ and the required documents(‘Student survey’ etc.), and receive an admission guide(afterschool care application, etc.). It would be nice to take a look around the school after the orientation. Don’t forget to check the bathrooms. It would be a great help to your kid to learn what to do in the toilet.
다음 해 초등학교에 입학할 자녀가 있는 경우 11~12월 즈음에 주민등록(외국인등록) 상 주소지에 배정 학교를 알리는 ‘취학통지서’가 배송될 것이다. ‘통지서’에는 ‘예비소집’ 일정이 기재되어 있는데 그 시일에 필히 자녀 동반으로 해당 학교로 가야 한다. (조기입학·입학연기 등은 관할교육청에 문의）
‘예비소집’은 보통 1월초에 실시된다. 설명회 같은 것이 아니며 ‘취학통지서’와 중요 서류들(‘학생기초조사서’ 등)을 제출하고 입학안내서류(돌봄교실 신청서 등)를 받으면 끝이다. 예비소집이 끝난 후, 살짝 교내를 구경해보면 좋을 것이다. 특히 화장실은 필수다. 부모와 함께 구경하고 일을 볼 연습을 해보면 큰 도움이 될 것이다.
If you have to change your address (moving) between October, when you prepare ‘the admission letter’, and the real admission, you better ask the Community Service Center around your area or the school in advance. You will receive some notices(classroom, HR teacher’s name, etc.) from the school on your phone or via text message around the end of February. In my case, I got text messages before admission, and now I am receiving school and class notices via the ‘Hi Class’ app. You can also get helpful information on the
school website.
All you have to prepare on the admission day is a small bag and indoor shoes. Though we were not able to join the entrance ceremony due to Covid-19 this year, we enjoyed taking photos in the playground after the ceremony. I was so proud of my kid’s excited face; full of joy and excitement.
만약에 ‘취학통지서’ 발행 준비가 시작되는 10월~입학 사이에 주소변경(이사)을 할 경우 사전에 주민센터나 통학 예정 학교에 문의하는 것이 좋다. 2월 말 즈음이 되면 학교에서 휴대전화 문자메시지 등으로 공지사항(배정 반, 담임선생님 성함 등) 연락이 올 것이다. 우리 아이 학교의 경우 입학 전에는 문자메시지, 입학 후는 ‘하이클래스’라는 앱을 통해 학교 및 학급 정보를 받고 있다. 참고로 학교홈페이지도 유익한 정보들을 얻을 수 있으니 한번 들여다보자.
입학식 당일은 보조가방에 실내화만 넣고 가볍게 보내주면 된다. 올해는 코로나로 부모의 입학식 참석은 불가능했지만 입학식을 마친 후 운동장에서 사진촬영을 즐겼다. 기쁨과 기대감에 얼굴이 붉어진 우리 아이 모습을 보니 정말로 뿌듯했다.

학용품 준비를 위하여
The school supplies that I can think of are: a backpack, a small bag, and indoor shoes. For your information, there will be special sale events held in department stores or other stores from January. Buy a light and useful backpack that fits your kid’s size and most importantly, buy what your kid wants. EVA materials are easier to wash than cloth for indoor shoes. You can write the name in large letters on the indoor shoes, since they will only be used at school, but do not write your child's name where it can be seen on the backpack. You don’t want to expose too much personal information.
You better follow these guidelines for other kinds of school supplies. Avoid a pencil case that can be played with, or anything made of plastic or metal, which can make a thumping sound on the floor. My kid uses the same water bottle that we have used since kindergarten. Wait for the school’s instruction regarding school supplies, notebook, jump rope, bookcase, etc. before you purchase them on your own. It will be helpful to be prepared with information about any nearby stationery stores in advance.
초등학교 준비물로 생각나는 것은 책가방과 보조 가방, 그리고 실내화다. 백화점 등에서 1월부터 기획전이 열리고 있으니 참고로 하자. 구매한다면 가볍고 실용적이고 아이 몸에 잘 맞고 무엇보다 아이가 마음에 드는 것을 골라야 한다. 참고로 실내화는 천 소재보다 빨래가 쉬운 EVA 소재가 무난하다. 그리고 실내화는 교내에서만 사용하니 이름을 크게 쓰면 좋지만 가방은 겉으로 보이는 곳에 이름을 쓰지 말아야 한다. 아이의 개인정보가 쉽게 노출되기 때문이다.
기타 학용품은 학교 안내에 따르는 것이 좋다. 참고로 필통은 게임기능이 있거나 떨어뜨리면 큰 소리가 나는 플라스틱·캔(철제) 제품은 피해야 된다. 물통은 우리 아이의 경우 유치원에서 쓰던 것을 그대로 사용한다. 필기구나 공책, 줄넘기, 책꽂이 등은 미리 사두지 말고 학교 안내를 기다리자. 집 근처 학용품 판매점(문방구점, 다이소 등)을 미리 알아 두면 편리할 것이다.

Be strictly punctual. Kids often get lost in school during the early phase. It’s better to get to school early enough in the morning. Most schools start an ‘afterschool program’ from March 3. Schools usually accept applications every other month, but kids need some time to get used to school in March and April. It will be quite a lot of pressure on your kid to apply for many programs from the very beginning. Do not forget to give your kid enough time to rest and relax.
School lunch time is the first challenge in elementary school. Help your kid try food they don’t like, and use ordinary chopsticks, instead of the children’s style. Inform the HR teacher of any food your child is allergic to.
Parents often take their children to school and back home at the beginning, and you must learn about the traffic signs that your kids will encounter. It will be helpful for children to make decisions about traffic signs on their own, even before entering school.
등교시간 엄수. 특히 입학하고 얼마 안 된 시기는 교내에서 길을 잃을 경우도 있으니 여유를 가지고 등교할 것. 대부분 학교에서 3월 3일부터 ‘방과후학교’ 프로그램이 시작된다. 보통 두 달에 한번 수강신청을 받지만 1학년에게 3~4월은 학교 적응시간이다. 매력적인 프로그램(수업)이 있다고 입학하자마자 여러 개를 신청해버리면 아이에게 큰 부담이 될 것이다. 휴식과 여유를 잊지 말아야 한다.
급식은 초등생활의 첫번째 관문이다. 안 좋아하는 음식도 입을 댈 수 있게, 교정용 젓가락이 아닌 일반 젓가락을 사용할 수 있게 연습하는 것이 좋다. 알레르기 식품 등이 있으면 반드시 담임선생님에게 미리 전달할 것.
입학 후 당분간 등하교를 부모가 함께 해주는 경우가 많은데 아이 앞에서는 교통규칙은 꼭 지켜야 한다. 입학 전부터 외출할 때 아이가 혼자서도 교통규칙을 판단할 수 있게 기회를 주면 좋은 연습이 될 것이다.
Academic work / 학습 편
Does a child need to learn how to read and write Korean before going to school? Busan Office of Education policy says, “Learn Korean at School.” In my case, my child did not use a textbook in March, which was a period of adjustment, but started to learn Korean in early April. The children can learn how to hold a pencil first, and then to write Korean; starting from consonants step by step. My kid’s school does not have a dictation test but it varies from school to school.
It is usually recommended to teach your kid at least how to read, not write, before starting elementary school. Textbooks are kept at school and you can buy them at book stores or online.
입학 전에 한글을 떼야 될까. 부산시교육청에서는 ‘한글교육은 학교에서’라는 입장이다. 우리 아이 학교에서는 3월은 적응기간으로 국어, 수학 등 교과서를 쓰지 않고, 한글교육이 시작된 것은 4월초부터였다. 연필을 잡는 법부터 가르치고 한글은 자음자부터 차근차근 다양한 방법을 통해 익혀준다. 우리 아이 학교는 받아쓰기는 안 시키는 방침인데 이런 부분은 학교마다 상이할 것이다.
보통 입학 전에 쓰기는 잘 안 되어도 읽기는 할 수 있게 하여 학교에 보내는 것이 좋다고 한다. 교과서는 학교에 보관하고 쓰는데 온/오프라인 서점 등에서도 구매 가능.
Parents / 부모 편
Don’t forget to write your child’s name on everything (including pen caps)! Name stickers are very helpful. You can buy the stickers online or at large markets, and even DAISO has a namesticker maker. Submit anything needed for you, your child, and teachers’ convenience, to the school. Lastly, privacy is strictly protected these days, but some HR teachers in younger grades sometimes release their phone number to parents. You can contact them for any notice or consultation, but always keep in mind that you better call or message them after school, unless it’s about an urgent matter.
아이 소지품에는 반드시 이름을 기재할 것(네임펜 뚜껑 같은 것들도 모두)! 네임스티커를 활용하면 편리하다. 인터넷 업체에 주문하거나 대형마트, 다이소에도 제작 기계가 있다. 제출할 서류가 있으면 최대한 빨리 제출해야 부모도 아이도 선생님도 편하다. 마지막으로 개인정보보호가 철칙인 요즘이지만 저학년 담임선생님은 개인 전화번호를 공개해주는 경우도 있다. 전달사항이 있거나 상담을 받고 싶으면 연락을 하면 되는데 급한 일이 아니면 방과후 시간에 보내는 배려를 잊지 말아야 한다.
