제 22회 부산독립영화제

Organized by the Busan Independent Film Association(BIFA) presided by director Oh Min-wook, the 22nd Busan Independent Film Festival will run for 5 days, from November 19th until 23rd 2020, at the BNK Busan Bank Art Cinema. Located on the edge of the Gukje Market, in the center of Nampo-dong, this venue is highly accessible for audiences. Having moved its office to that area at the start of the year, BIFA is pleased to hold its 22nd edition in this district, which is deeply related to Busan’s movie history.

부산독립영화협회(BIFA)가 주최하고 오민욱 감독이 주관하는 제 22회 부산독립영화제가 2020년 11월 19일부터 23일까지 BNK 부산은행 아트시네마에서 5일간 열린다. 남포동의 중심이자 국제 마켓 끝자락에 위치한 이곳은 관객들이 쉽게 접근할 수 있는 장소다. 올해 초 이 지역으로 사무실을 옮긴 BIFA는 부산 영화의 역사와 깊은 관련이 있는 이곳 에서 22회 영화제를 열게 되어 감회가 새롭다.

Much like every other film festival everywhere this year, this event is prepared in contingency with the Covid-19 situation and in following the government’s guidelines on health and safety. Therefore, unless BNK Busan Bank Art Cinema must close due to another wave of infections, screenings and GVs (“guest visits”, or Q&A sessions) with the filmmakers are set to take place offline — meaning only in the theater. Indeed, BIFA decided not to prepare an online edition in an effort to stay true to its core belief: that festivals should be a chance for people to gather and watch films together. While in 2020, everything seems to be changing every single day, the Busan Independent Film Festival intends to show that some things should not change. As such, it aims to keep encouraging filmmakers, celebrating their efforts and remembering the joy of showing films physically to a live audience.

올해 다른 많은 영화제와 마찬가지로 부산독립영화 제는 코로나 상황으로 인한 만일의 사태에 대비하며 정부의 보건 지침을 따르고 있다. 또 한 번 대규모 감염으로 BNK 부산은행 아트시네마가 문을 닫아야 하는 상황이 아니라면 상영 및 제작자 GV(게스트 초청 또는 Q&A 세션)는 오프라인으로 진행된다. 물론 장소는 극장 내로 제한한다. BIFA는 핵심 가치를 지키려는 노력의 일환으로 별도의 온라인 버전은 마련하지 않기로 했다. BIFA의 핵심 가치란 축제는 모든 사람이 함께 모여 영화를 즐길 수 있어야 한다는 것이다. 2020년엔 매일 모든 것이 달라지는 것처럼 보인다. 하지만 부산독립영화제는 세상에 변하지 않는 무언가가 있다는 것을 보여주고자 한다. 영화제작자들을 독려하고, 그들의 노고를 기리고, 관객들의 눈앞에서 생생하게 영화를 보여주는 기쁨을 기억하는 방식으로 말이다.

However, due to the virus, the festival will show less films and host less GVs than usual. Furthermore, the Opening and Closing Ceremonies were canceled. Each film will be screened only one time individually. The section “Busan Independent Feature Film Invitation”, which usually selects movies made within the year, has been changed and is now named “Busan Spectrum”. It shall now include recent films as well as past ones — all independent movies made in Busan — such as At the Empty Place (directed by Jung Sung-wook, 1997), Visitor (directed by Park Sung-rim, 2007) and Sasang: The Town on Sand (directed by Park Bae-il, 2020).

하지만 바이러스로 인해 상영작과 GV횟수도 평소보다 줄었다. 개막식과 폐막식도 취소되었다. 영화는 각각 한 번씩만 상영된다. 대개 그 해에 제작된 영화를 선정하던 “부산독립영화제 초청”은 “부산 스펙트럼” 이라는 이름으로 바뀌었다. 이제는 빈곳에서(감독 정성욱, 1997), 낯익은 여름(감독 박성림, 2007), 사상(감독 박배일, 2020) 등 제작시기를 따지지 않고 부산에서 제작된 모든 독립영화를 총망라한다.

The section “Deep Focus” focuses on a filmmaker’s body of work. This year, it will present four beautiful, sincere and honest documentary films from director Kim Mi-rye: NoGaDa (2005), Wea Bak: Stayed Out Over Night? (2009), Live (2013) and East Asian Anti-Japanese Armed Front which was released earlier this year. The festival will also hold a 50-minute cine-talk with director Kim. In addition, the competition section “Made in Busan” will feature 11 selected films, including Ice by director Lee Seong-wook (which was the closing film at the 10th Seoul International PRIDE Film Festival) and Black Light, the first feature film by director Bae Jong-dae who earned praise in 2007 at the 9th Busan Independent Film Festival. The “Local to Local” program will screen films produced in other cities, such as Festival by director Kim Lok-kyung and Days in a summer by director Oh Jung-suk, who previously won the Audience Award at the 17th Busan Independent Film Festival.

“딥 포커스”는 영화 제작자들의 작품에 초점을 맞춘다. 올해는 김미례 감독의 노가다(2005), 외박(2009), 산다(2013) 및 올해 초 개봉한 동아시아 반일무장전선이라는 아름답고 솔직하고 진정성 있는 네 가지 다큐멘터리 영화를 선보인다. 김미례 감독과 50분의 시네 토크도 마련되어 있다. 경쟁 부문 “메이드 인 부산”에서는 이성욱 감독 의 아이스(제 10회 서울국제프라이드영화제 폐막작), 빛과 철, 2017년 제 9회 부산국제독립영화제에서 극찬을 받은 배종대 감독의 로컬 투 로컬 등 11개 작품이 선정되었다. “로컬 투 로컬” 프로그램은 김록경 감독의 잔칫날이나 제 17회 부산국제독립영화제 관객상을 수상한 오정석 감독의 여름날 등 다른 도시에서 제작된 영화를 상영한다.
